Seven years ago, a group of determined neighbors came together with a shared mission: to protect the Zennebeemden nature reserve. Their goal was clear—to safeguard this invaluable forest from Plopsa’s plans to construct a theme park on its grounds.
I am incredibly proud to have been one of those people, and even more so to have served as the public face and spokesperson of the campaign for seven years. I also developed and implemented the communication strategy in all its aspects.
Mechelen, December 12, 2024 – After seven years of legal battles, public pressure, and relentless campaigning, the Zennebeemden nature reserve has been saved. Plopsa has officially announced that it will permanently halt plans for a water park in this valuable natural area. This is a resounding victory for nature and a testament to the power of collaboration between citizens, organizations, and legal experts.
Just like David once defeated Goliath, our small but determined community has managed to stop a corporate giant. While Plopsa claims that economic factors influenced its decision, we know that the legal conflict surrounding the recognition of the nature reserve ultimately tipped the scales. Thanks to our lawyers, countless volunteers, and thousands of supporters, we were able to present undeniable facts that left no room for compromise.
A Campaign Fueled by Vision and Storytelling
At the heart of this campaign was an unwavering mission that held firm like a vice grip, guiding every decision and action. Strong storytelling played a pivotal role, taking hundreds—ultimately thousands—of people on a shared journey over the past seven years. The campaign operated on multiple levels, combining legal efforts with public mobilization and direct action.
A petition garnered over 12,000 signatures, reflecting widespread public support. Additionally, a crowdfunding campaign inspired over 350 donations, raising more than €13,000 to fund legal and advocacy efforts. This collective effort empowered us to build a robust case and sustain the campaign over the long haul.
A Triumph of Collective Effort
This victory is not just a legal milestone but a collective achievement. Thousands of people raised their voices, supported the campaign, and organized actions to highlight the importance of the Zennebeemden. With this unwavering support, we were able to file a strong appeal and secure the future of this precious area.
“This is the best Christmas gift we could have imagined,” said Jan De Coster. “What began as an uphill battle against a powerful opponent has ended in a triumph for nature and the community. This is a victory for everyone who believes in the power of unity and in the value of protecting our natural environment.”
Looking Ahead
While this battle has been won, our work is not done. In the coming months, we will continue to monitor the case and seek a seat at the table to help shape the future of the Zennebeemden nature reserve. Our goal is to ensure that the area remains protected and becomes a place where biodiversity, education, and recreation can thrive in harmony.
We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this success. Together, we have made history and proven that nature and community can make a difference. The Zennebeemden is not only a site of immense ecological value but now also a symbol of hope and determination.
