I started 2024 with a tour around Europe, visiting many festivals, showing my work of the past years and giving talks. This tour ended a few weeks ago with my greatest talk yet in Sevilla. We had an amazing time. I met hundreds of people and I was certain this year was going to bring a pivotal moment in my career, but I didn’t expect the direction it would take me. I am very grateful for all the people who took the time to talk with me for hours about what was going on in the creative industry. It has led to the conclusion that it is time to end Slightly Overdone studio on this high note, and focus my energy elsewhere. So what happened?
In 2008 I decided to name my studio Slightly Overdone because it suited the way I approached projects at that time. When agencies came to me with a brief, they knew I would push the envelope to the point where it would sometimes become slightly uncomfortable for the client, because that meant we could enter unexplored territories and adventure would await us. Agencies would outsource the risk of challenging projects if the timing and budget would allow it. But traditional agencies started changing over the years. They started merging into larger organisations, often accompanied by the structure and strategies of consulting companies. Even though there were still challenging briefs, projects started to stumble over legal and administrative obstacles. That is the current economic reality.
I believe I was very lucky to be able to work in the creative industry during a time where risk taking and daring concepts were very common. We had a lot of crazy adventures and agencies wanted to pay for it. I am very grateful for all the clients who were willing to take a chance and go Slightly Overdone over the past 16 years. Thank you.
DONE.
